Gang violence continues to punctuate daily life in Haiti and mainly in the capital.

Shots are still ringing out in Cité Soleil, where for the past week two gatherings of gangs have been clashing.

The first assessment established by a Haitian NGO reported 89 people killed and 74 injured.

On Saturday July 16, the UN announced that in just four days, from July 8 to 12, 234 people were killed or injured.

It is a heavy assessment that draws up the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Although it is not known in detail how many of these 234 victims were killed or only injured, one thing is certain: the majority were not directly linked to the gangs, but they were knowingly targeted by the armed gangs or otherwise victims of stray bullets.

The other aspect of these gang wars is, once again, the vulnerability of girls and women as sexual violence is reported to have been committed against civilians in Cité Soleil.

What should also be emphasized is that today, following the massacre in the plain of Port-au-Prince, when at least 190 people were killed between the end of April and the beginning of May, the Haitian authorities are saying nothing.

Whether it is members of the government or the Prime Minister, there is deafening silence: not a word for the attention of the victims, of the families traumatized by this violence.

An attitude that only increases the anger of the inhabitants against officials.

Authorities that the UN considers to be “

overwhelmed by the situation

 ”.
