Several mayors of major Italian cities wrote an open letter calling on Prime Minister Mario Draghi to continue governing after his offer to step down.

"We ask Mario Draghi to go ahead and present the good reasons in Parliament that require government action to continue," said the letter published on Saturday, signed by Rome's Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, Beppe Sala from the metropolis of Milan and nine other counterparts.

The eleven politicians - mainly Social Democrats - called on the ruling parties in Parliament to act in the interests of the country and its problems.

After the pandemic and during the war in Ukraine, the cities were called upon to restart the economy and implement necessary construction projects, the representatives of the people wrote.

"Now more than ever we need stability, certainty and consistency to continue the transformation of our cities."

The people of Italy, meanwhile, are eagerly awaiting Wednesday, when Draghi plans to report on the current situation to the Senate.

He could continue as head of government or there could be early elections.

The trigger for the political crisis was the abstention of the co-governing Five Star Movement in a confidence vote in the Senate on Thursday.
