As of this week, Monsanto is again allowed to import glyphosate and genetically modified corn into Mexico.

The giant of the manufacture of GMO seeds obtained by the decision of a judge of the administrative court of the 6th district of Mexico City the suspension, at least for the company, of a presidential decree issued at the end of 2020. The latter prohibited the import of these substances and the gradual elimination by 2024 of the use of the herbicide considered carcinogenic by the WHO.

The ban on glyphosate and

genetically modified

corn seeds has been declared unconstitutional.

In fact, Monsanto can now use its authorizations again and therefore import, use and distribute these products in Mexico.

According to the decision rendered by an administrative judge on Thursday, the presidential decree issued two years ago lacks foundations and the scientific evidence would be insufficient.

The judge's decision argues that the text would notably lack precise explanations concerning the effects of glyphosate on human health.

As well as the risks that transgenic maize could represent for the survival of other maize species present in Mexico.

The government prepares to fight back

Several environmental defense associations reacted strongly to denounce this decision.

For its part, the government, through its Ministry of the Environment, has already announced its intention to challenge it.

For 10 days, by means of an appeal, he can appeal and seize a collegiate court which can confirm, modify or revoke the judge's decision.
