Terrible fires sweeping Portugal

About 1,500 firefighters in Portugal are battling to extinguish several forest fires that broke out in the country, which numbered 35, and this comes on the impact of high temperatures that reached about 42 degrees Celsius.

Video clips showed frightening scenes showing the moments of massive fires that reached a number of homes, while the sky turned orange due to the clouds of smoke.

Andre Fernandez, civil protection chief, said the fires left 27 people slightly injured, while seven homes and farm structures were damaged in recent days.

"There is no major fire active at the moment, but the situation is serious," he told a news briefing.

The fires tore up about 2,000 hectares (4,900 acres) of vegetation and about 600 firefighters remained in the area after containing it to prevent it from restarting.
