The distribution of the mountain goose until the mid-1950s stretched from China in the east to the Swedish / Norwegian mountain range in the west.

Since then, the decline of the species has been extensive - and is now globally endangered.

In Sweden, the mountain goose is classified as critically endangered and has been protected from hunting since 1964.

The species gets help on the stack

This weekend, about 30 bred mountain geese were released in the Gällivare mountains.

- They are too few and if it is to survive in the long run, you need help, says Emilia Vesterberg, biologist at the County Administrative Board in Norrbotten.

Transmitter on the mountain geese

The mountain geese that were released have a transmitter so that they can study data such as flight patterns and behavior.

At places it visits, targeted efforts can be made, among other things, to improve for the coming years' flocks during the pre-season.
