"Rifkin's festival" offers the codes of the universe of Woody Allen, with a slightly awkward hero, jealous, in love, subscribed to sessions at the shrink.

For cinema columnist Thomas Bauras, the 86-year-old director no longer has the devastating energy of yesteryear, like the protagonist with whom he identifies.

Despite everything, he takes advantage of this film to pay homage to the European cinema which inspired him and shaped American cinema in the 1960s. He makes references to "Citizen Kane", "Jules and Jim", "Persona", "Les wild strawberries", "Eight and a half", "The Exterminating Angel" or "The seventh seal", offering knowing winks to the spectators.

Discovered out of competition at the last Cannes Film Festival, the feature film "La nuit du 12", by Dominik Moll, is inspired by a true and unexplained story.

The film recounts the murder of a young woman in Savoy, set on fire, and whose killer has never been found.

The judicial police multiplies the leads and dead ends.

This is an opportunity to look into this question: is it normal that crimes, mostly committed by men, are also elucidated by men?

In any case, the French filmmaker Dominik Moll, who had signed "Harry a friend who wants you well" or more recently "Only the beasts", once again succeeds in the exercise of psychological thriller, with a main actor, Bastien Bouillon , which serves the story well.

Another film noir, "Les nuits de Mashhad", was presented in competition on the Croisette.

Ali Abassi follows a serial killer who raged in Iran in the early 2000s and murdered prostitutes.

A journalist, played by actress Zar Amir Ebrahimi, will sink into the darkness of this affair.

This role also earned her the Best Actress award at Cannes.

The Iranian scenario writer does not hide the identity of the murderer and even adopts the point of view of the monster.

This has the effect of causing some discomfort among the spectators and gives an impression of complacency on the part of the director in his way of staging the horror, as if he were feasting on this violence.

Still, the springs of the plot offer a schizophrenic portrait of Iranian society, torn between an authoritarian theocratic power and increasingly questioned, and a thirst for freedom.

The actress Zar Amir Ebrahimi had to leave her country in 2008 after a sex tape leaked on social networks and ruined her career in her country.

Three Iranian filmmakers arrested

Several Iranian filmmakers have recently been imprisoned by the Tehran regime.

Arrested on July 8, 2022, Mostafa Aleahmad and Mohammad Rasoulof (Golden Bear in Berlin in 2020 for "The devil does not exist") were detained in a secret location for "disturbing public order".

They had actually denounced on social networks the police repression which followed a popular demonstration after the collapse of a building in the south-west of the country, which left 43 dead.

Hossein Abdolbaghi, owner of the Métropole tower and close to some important figures of the regime, had managed to circumvent safety standards during construction.

On July 11, Jafar Panahi was arrested in turn before the Tehran public prosecutor's office when he came to support his friends and colleagues.

The Cannes Film Festival has joined its voice to others to demand the release of the three Iranian filmmakers.

The Cannes Film Festival calls for the immediate release of filmmakers Mohammad Rasoulof, Mostafa Aleahmad and Jafar Panahi and reaffirms its support for all those who, throughout the world, suffer violence and reprisals.
