The so-called "deep field" images show lots of stars and massive galaxies that sent out their light billions of years ago.

Some images show light that was emitted not too long after the Big Bang, which occurred 13.8 billion Earth years ago.

Now the research world is waiting with excitement for the raw material that will be released on Thursday.

- With the raw material, we researchers can understand what kind of stars there are in the universe, says Jens Melinder, PhD in astronomy at Stockholm University and one of many who have followed the James Webb project closely.
