He will continue to fulfill his duties until the election of a new head of the cabinet of ministers.
Later, the new head of the UK Treasury, Nadeem Zahavi, announced that he intended to run for the post of leader of the ruling Conservative Party and prime minister after Johnson's resignation.
British Minister of Transport Grant Shapps also announced similar intentions.
