  About one-tenth of the world's saline-alkali land is in China, and about one-tenth of China's saline-alkali land is expected to be "revived".

  From Changchun, Jilin, to the northwest for hundreds of kilometers, we arrived at a large area of ​​white saline-alkali land, which used to be a nightmare for agriculture, hardened by drought and waterlogging when it rained.

But now, Baicheng City, which is located here, has become the largest rice-growing area in Jilin Province.

  At four o'clock in the morning, when the sky was bright, Ma Wei, an associate researcher at the Rice Research Institute of the Jilin Academy of Agricultural Sciences, went down to the field to observe the growth of the rice and record various data.

Eight years ago, he was only 30 years old when he first arrived in Gashigen Township, Zhenlai County.

  Since 1988, three generations of researchers from Jilin Academy of Agricultural Sciences have been working hard on the saline-alkali land in Zhenlai County, Baicheng City. Through the method of "controlling alkali with rice and controlling waterlogging with rice", the barren land has been wafted out of the aroma of rice, and more To achieve high yields, millions of acres of saline-alkali land in Zhenlai County have been developed and utilized.

  It is the third generation that the "baton" has been passed to Ma Wei.

The mission of this generation is to strengthen the local rice industry, make rice more fragrant and farmers more productive.

  Every year, Ma Wei will conduct a yield comparison test of dozens of new rice varieties selected by the unit, and then screen new rice varieties with high yield, high quality and strong resistance suitable for planting in the western region of Jilin Province.

But not every year has a satisfactory result. In the first autumn, a strong wind blew all the rice in the experimental field down.

He paced back and forth on the ridge in distress, unable to sleep for many days.

  Rice varieties generally need to be replaced after three to five years of promotion, otherwise not only will the yield decline, but the disease resistance will also be reduced.

In recent years, Ma Wei and his colleagues have successfully screened out a number of new high-quality edible rice varieties such as "Jijing 816" and "Jijing 830", which have been widely promoted in the western region of Jilin Province.

Compared with the traditional ordinary round-grain rice, the new varieties can increase the income by more than 1,000 yuan per hectare of paddy fields.

  There are still a large number of heavily saline-alkali soils in Zhenlai County. In order to screen rice varieties with stronger salt and alkali tolerance as soon as possible, Ma Wei is working hard to improve the screening efficiency.

He tried to establish a rapid screening and evaluation system for salinity and alkali resistance of rice and an identification method for salinity and alkali resistance in the whole growth period, which provided the basis for the subsequent development of severe salinity and alkali land.

  According to estimates by experts, in addition to the 1.9 billion mu of arable land, China has nearly 1.5 billion mu of saline-alkali land, accounting for about one-tenth of the global saline-alkali land area, mainly distributed in the northwest, northeast, north China and coastal areas.

Among them, nearly one-tenth of the saline-alkali land has the potential for development and utilization.

In the past few decades, countless scientific researchers have taken root in the grassroots and worked hard, which has made the cultivation of tens of millions of mu of saline-alkali land prosperous and galloping.

  This year, the area of ​​paddy fields in Zhenlai County has reached 1.55 million mu, and if the weather is good, 2 billion catties of rice can be produced.

Ma Wei said that if China's saline-alkali land can be rationally developed and utilized, China's grain output will surely reach a new level.
