Two countries voted in favor, three against.

Ten other states abstained.

The project provided for the possibility of extending the work of the checkpoint for another six months after six months.

As Dmitry Polyansky, First Deputy Representative of Russia to the UN, said, "today's vote is more eloquent than any words."

“Those who did not support our project have demonstrated their real attitude towards the needs and aspirations of ordinary Syrians,” he said.

Prior to this, Russia blocked in the UN Security Council a resolution prepared by Ireland and Norway to extend the operation of the Bab el-Hawa checkpoint for a year.

Polyansky noted that the resolution prepared by the West ignored the interests of Damascus.
