Modi posted on social media that he was deeply saddened by Abe's attack and was "shocked and saddened" by his tragic death.
He described Abe as "an outstanding global statesman", saying he "has made a huge contribution to elevating India-Japan relations to the level of a special strategic and global partnership".
Modi also said that the whole of India mourned with Japan and announced that a one-day national mourning would be held on the 9th.
