According to media reports, former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe suffered life-threatening injuries in an attack.

The Japanese news agency Kyodo and the public broadcaster NHK report that a possible shot was heard at a campaign event in the Nara region.

The Jiji news agency reported, citing party circles, that Abe bled from the neck and collapsed.

The 67-year-old should no longer show any vital signs: NHK reported, citing the fire department, that Abe apparently had a cardiovascular arrest.

He was therefore taken to a hospital.

NHK reported a man was arrested.

Abe served as Prime Minister of Japan from 2006 to 2007 and then from 2012 to 2020.
