news of the day

Taken on the first day of the Russian invasion by Vladimir Putin's troops, Serpents' Island has now officially returned to the Ukrainian camp.

"We have effectively restored our physical control," the Ukrainian military said Thursday.

Already on Monday, after the departure of Russian troops, kyiv announced that the Ukrainian flag was once again floating on this small piece of land located in the northwest of the Black Sea.

This island had become emblematic from the first day of the conflict when a member of the small Ukrainian garrison defending it ordered the Russian ship which was demanding its surrender to “go fuck itself”.

Its geographical location is also strategic since it protects a navigation corridor leading in particular to the port cities of Odessa, Mykolaiv or Kherson.

The number

Russia now controls 22% of agricultural land in Ukraine, according to satellite images taken on June 13 by the European Space Agency's Sentinel-2 mission and analyzed by the US space agency's Crop Program.

This includes 28% of winter cereals (wheat, barley, rye) and 18% of summer crops (corn and sunflower seeds), specifies NASA in its note.

The phrase

High-level Russian participation can pose a threat to the credibility, effectiveness and relevance of the G20.

Josep Borrell's spokeswoman, Nabila Massrali, said that "the appalling war against Ukraine and the consequences of Russia's aggression will be discussed during these meetings, but we will not allow Moscow to use the G20 as a platform for its propaganda”.

The trend of the day

The announcement of Boris Johnson's fall could have worried Volodymyr Zelensky about the UK's future support for Ukraine.

Indeed, the British Prime Minister was one of the leaders of the countries that sided with kyiv against Vladimir Putin.

But according to analysts and observers, the Ukrainian people actually don't have to worry too much.

“The line will remain, the style will be different,” considers Sylvie Bermann, former French ambassador to the United Kingdom and Russia.

“Support for kyiv is a position that is very shared in the UK so it should not change”.

“Anyone who would have been Prime Minister would have done more or less the same thing, Johnson brought his own style to it, but it is a policy which will outlive him”, abounds Lord Peter Ricketts, former British security adviser and former ambassador of the United Kingdom in France.
