Haftar: The time has come for the Libyan people to take charge of their own affairs

The Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan Armed Forces, Khalifa Haftar, said that the time had come for the people to take charge of their own affairs, and that it was he who had the decision to change, in his first comment on the protests in the country.

During his first visit in years to the city of Derna after it was retaken from ISIS, Haftar said in a public celebration: "Our battles against terrorism are the first stage of the struggle to restore the homeland and build the state," and added: "We are deceiving ourselves if we consider this arduous march." It ended with the defeat of terrorism."

In the celebration, which was described by Libyan media as "a rally", Haftar said, "It is the people who make salvation only themselves," and that "the people are the ones who have the decision to change, reject the bitter reality and put an end to those who disregard their interests and aspirations, and those who tamper with their wealth and capabilities."

He added that "the people should not wait for miracles to happen, and they have no choice but to break the barrier of fear and hesitation."
