After meditating for a while, the mayor of Rivas, Pedro del Cura (IU), announced

his resignation on Monday after eight years

as first mayor of the town (where he governs together with PSOE and Podemos).

Del Cura, at the head of the last bastion of Izquierda Unidad in the Community of Madrid since May 2014, "has fulfilled the commitment of spending eight years in the Mayor's Office", as municipal sources point out to this newspaper.

"As that time has passed,

he makes the decision to step aside

," they add.

It will be on Wednesday when he attends his

plenary session of resignation

.

Right after, the investiture plenary session of her replacement will take place:

Aída Castillejo

, her

number two

and the person who will become the new mayor of Rivas.

From that moment, Del Cura will request his

reinstatement to his old job

as a civil servant in the City Council, within the Department of Education.

"He was on forced leave since he was in public office," add the same sources.

Del Cura himself, whose political career began 19 years ago, offered a press conference on Monday where he explained his decision a little more: "My first plenary session as mayor was in June 2014. It's eight years, which is equivalent to two legislatures, and

it is more than enough time to be able to take over

".

The still councilman has clarified that Rivas has a government team "with the entire left working together", highlighting his "knowledge and commitment", and wishing "that they continue in

this collective project

in which we are only an expression of that will" .

"There is a project not only for the next legislature, but for the next few decades, since it has been shown that this team works without noise, focusing on the city.

The economic situation is very stable

, with the largest investment achieved to date... conflicts or problems," Del Cura pointed out, concluding:

"My militancy will continue here,

as will my commitment to the neighbors, so that Rivas continues to be Rivas."
