Some of them decomposed.. 31 bodies were found in a funeral home in the US state of Indiana

Police in the US state of Indiana found 31 bodies, some decomposing, inside a funeral home, in an incident described by the coroner's office as "extremely disturbing."

According to the Associated Press, police in the Jeffersonville suburb of Jeffersonville on Friday evening discovered 31 bodies, some "in advanced stages of decomposition", inside the home, according to Police Officer Isaac Parker.

The county coroner's office reported a strong smell emanating from the building, the officer said.

Inside, police found bodies "in various places around the building".

Parker said some of the bodies had been at the funeral home since last March.

He reported that the police had opened an investigation and that the funeral home owner had been speaking to the police since Friday.

The remains were taken to the Clark County Coroner's office for identification.

Police asked anyone who might have information to contact the coroner's office.
