Today, the Sörmland region decided that staff in health care as well as home care and special housing should use mouth guards in work close to patients.

The decision also applies to visitors.

- The idea of reintroducing oral protection is to protect patients from a spread of covid-19 that is present in the population and could reach them via staff, says Mikael Stenhem, acting infection control doctor in the Sörmland region.

From 71 to 180 cases in two weeks

Last week, 180 new cases of covid infection were registered, compared with 107 the week before and 71 the week before.

At the Lagersbergsgården nursing home in Eskilstuna, mouth guards have not been used since mid-February when most of the restrictions disappeared.

- We celebrated with cake so you could say it was a joy, says the accommodation's unit manager Ove Rosén.

Now, newly hired staff will have to look through instructional videos on mouth protection.
