Yesterday (3rd), the ruling and opposition party leaders met in private twice to negotiate the composition of the National Assembly, but they could not narrow their differences.

The Democratic Party announced that it would hold a plenary session this afternoon even if an agreement was not reached and that it would elect the Speaker of the National Assembly first.

The representatives of the ruling and opposition parties met in private on two occasions yesterday.

In the afternoon, only Kwon Seong-dong, floor leader of the People's Power, and Park Hong-geun, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, met for about two hours, and at night, the opposition leaders and the chief of the floor gathered to negotiate for about an hour.

It was a final meeting ahead of the plenary meeting scheduled for 2pm today, but an agreement was not reached.

[Kwon Seong-dong / People's Power Floor Leader: It took a long time to talk about each other's thoughts.

However, it is difficult to see that there has been ‘special progress’.]

Park Hong-geun, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said, “The difference between the positions of the two parties was still large, so the negotiation practically broke down. If not, the election of the Speaker of the National Assembly will be handled at the plenary session as scheduled this afternoon,” he said.

A key issue is whether additional measures are taken in relation to the so-called 'examiner' law.

The Democratic Party is demanding the cancellation of the request for adjudication of the Constitutional Court's authority dispute related to the 'Complete Inspection' Bill and the formation of a Special Committee on Judicial Reform, instead of giving the power of the people to the Judiciary Committee, the gateway to the National Assembly's bill processing.

The People's Power is arguing that if you accept this, you will be recognizing the 'check-and-run' bill, and it is absolutely unacceptable.

With the People's Power convening a general assembly of members of the National Assembly at 10 am today and the Democratic Party at 1:30 pm, it was reported that the meeting of the party leaders before the plenary session itself was unclear.

The People's Power plans to request all lawmakers to stand by in an emergency and block the affair if the Democratic Party proceeds to elect the Speaker of the National Assembly alone.
