Al-Burhan announces the withdrawal of the army from the dialogue and sets a date for the dissolution of the Sovereignty Council

On Monday, the head of the Sudanese Sovereign Council, Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan, announced that the military institution would not participate in the dialogue run by the tripartite mechanism, stressing the importance of protecting the unity and security of Sudan.

Al-Burhan said in a speech: "Our goal is to protect security and democratic transformation," adding that "the military institution will not participate in the dialogue managed by the tripartite mechanism."

The head of the Sovereign Council added: "We call on all national forces to participate in the Sudanese dialogue."

He stressed that "the military institution will be committed to implementing the outcomes of the dialogue," and that the Sovereignty Council "will be dissolved after the formation of the next government, and a Supreme Council of the Armed Forces will be formed."

Al-Burhan explained that the army's withdrawal from the dialogue "aims to make room for the political and revolutionary forces to form a competent government."

Sudan has witnessed almost daily protests, since the measures taken by the army last October, when it removed the civilian component of the transitional government.

Senior members of the Foreign Relations Committee of the US Congress had called on the Sudanese army to return to its barracks and hand over power to civilians, and urged the US administration and the international community to impose individual sanctions directed at those responsible for human rights violations and corruption.

A joint statement issued by Republican and Democratic members of the committee stressed the need to respect the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful demonstrations.
