A 19-year-old young man died by drowning on Saturday afternoon in Ouistreham (Calvados).

The victim was bathing in the company of eight friends when the tide was rising.

The group was surprised by the progress of the water and found themselves stuck in the hollow where they were, says France Bleu Normandie.

Alerted, the emergency services went to the scene.

Six of the bathers had then managed to regain the beach by their own means, but their comrades were still in difficulty.

Rescuers therefore launched an intervention.

An attempt at resuscitation

The Civil Security Dragon 76 helicopter, the gendarmerie's nautical brigade and two SNSM boats from Ouistreham were mobilized.

Two of the three people in danger were thus rescued.

As for the 19-year-old, he was located further away.

Rescuers brought him back to shore, but were unable to resuscitate him.

This is the first drowning of the summer season in the waters of the English Channel.
