3 people were killed and 8 others injured in a 6.1-magnitude earthquake that struck early Saturday in southern Iran, state television and Iranian media reported.

"Unfortunately, we have 3 dead and 3 wounded," Mehrdad Hassanzadeh, director of emergency management in the southern province of Hormozgan, told television.

Iranian media said the quake had a magnitude of 6.1, while the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center said the quake was at a magnitude of 6 and at a depth of 10 km.

The US Geological Survey also initially stated that the earthquake's strength was 6.2 degrees, before adjusting the measurement to 6 degrees, adding that the earthquake hit an area located 100 km southwest of the port of Bandar bin Abbas in southern Iran at the entrance to the Arabian Gulf.

Iran lies at the intersection of major geological fault lines, and has suffered several devastating earthquakes in recent years.
