“If Finland and Sweden become NATO members, then Kaliningrad, the only Russian land in the Baltics, will be completely surrounded by the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance, and the Baltic Sea will turn into a NATO lake,” the author writes.

Thus, the accession of countries to NATO can change the geopolitical situation and create additional tension.

As Yassykaya suggests, if Sweden and Finland join the alliance, Russia will begin to increase its presence in the Baltic and North Seas. 

On June 30, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced the signing of a protocol on the accession of Sweden and Finland to the alliance on July 5.
