WHO: There is no room for complacency in the fight against monkeypox

The World Health Organization has called on governments and citizens in Europe to increase efforts to combat the spread of monkeypox in the coming weeks and months.

Today, Friday, in Copenhagen, Hans Kluge, Regional Director of the World Health Organization for Europe, said that urgent and coordinated action is necessary if there is a desire to confront the spread of the disease, indicating that there is no room for complacency here.

Europe, many of which belong to the 53-member World Health Organization - plus a number of countries east of the European Union - is now the epicenter of the monkeypox outbreak.

Nearly 90% of all laboratory-confirmed cases worldwide since mid-May are due to the European region, according to Kluge.

Kluge explained that a total of 31 countries and territories from within the European region have reported cases of monkeypox, noting that the number of confirmed cases in the region has tripled, reaching more than 4,500 cases in the past two weeks.

According to Kluge, the World Health Organization still classifies the risk of monkeypox in Europe as high.

Kluge stated that 99 percent of the infected people are male and most of them are between 21 and 40 years old, but other cases have also become known among women and children.

Fortunately, Kluge said, no deaths were reported.
