Prior to the trial, the 44-year-old underwent a medical examination to assess his mental health, a so-called section 7 examination.

According to the medical certificate, he does not have a serious mental disorder, which means that there is no basis for forensic psychiatric care, and thus no obstacle to the man being imprisoned if he is convicted of the crime.

The suspect was previously convicted in the district court in 1997 for the crime but acquitted in the Court of Appeal as he could not be bound by the crime.

After the police succeeded in securing evidence in the form of DNA traces, the Supreme Court granted redress in the case.
