Today, the principle is that independent and municipal schools receive the same basic amount per pupil from the municipality's budget.

When the costs for the municipality's schools increase, for example due to the fact that they have more pupils in need of extra support, the budget for the independent schools is also increased, regardless of whether they also have increased costs or not.

But school fees can also lead to uncertainty for independent schools because it is unpredictable how the municipality calculates the level of school fees.

The government has previously said that independent schools are overcompensated and therefore put forward a proposal to reduce tuition fees for them by between eight and ten percent.

It was voted down in the Riksdag.

The National Audit Office also does not believe that this is the right way to go.

Their proposal is to instead investigate a fixed standard amount for the independent schools.
