NATO requires member countries to spend at least 2% of GDP on defense, but only 9 out of 30 member states have met this criterion.

"The strengthening of NATO's defense capability is for the safety of its member countries," said Prime Minister Scholz, adding that Germany will deploy 15,000 armored divisions, a regional maritime command, 60 aircraft and 20 naval units to the front.



NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg called on member states to unite, saying that NATO should play a key role in preventing Russia's war in Ukraine from spreading to other countries.



Stoltenberg called Russia's war in Ukraine "the greatest renewal of our collective defense since the end of the Cold War."



At the summit, NATO declared Russia "the most serious and direct threat" and agreed to build up military forces on the Eastern Front, from Romania to the Baltic states.



He also referred to China for the first time in his newly adopted 'Strategic Concepts' document, noting that "China's explicit ambitions and coercive policies challenge our interests, security and values."



As Turkiye (Turkey), who had been opposed to Finland and Sweden's accession to NATO, withdrew its opposition at a discussion held during the summit, the two countries, which have maintained neutrality for more than 70 years, have virtually confirmed their entry into NATO.
