Zelensky announces the severance of relations with Syria after its recognition of the independence of Lugansk and Donetsk

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Kyiv had cut off all relations with Syria after it recognized the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, as Syria became the first country in the world after Russia to recognize the two mentioned republics.

"Russia finally obtained a statement from Syria regarding the alleged recognition of the occupation structures in Donbass as an alleged state," Zelensky said.

He added: "In this case, there will be no more relations with Syria, and the pressure of sanctions on Syria, on the contrary, will be greater."

The Syrian Foreign Ministry announced earlier the government's decision to recognize the independence and sovereignty of the Lugansk and Donetsk People's Republics.

An official source in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said: "Emforming the common will and desire to establish relations in all fields, the Syrian Arab Republic has decided to recognize the independence and sovereignty of both the Lugansk People's Republic and the Donetsk People's Republic."

The source added that communication will be held with both countries to agree on frameworks for strengthening relations, including establishing diplomatic relations in accordance with the established rules.
