A major fire has been raging in the north of the Pyrénées-Orientales since Tuesday evening.

The flames had destroyed 1,100 hectares of vegetation this Wednesday morning around the municipalities of Salses-le-Château and Opoul-Périllos (Pyrénées-Orientales).

More than 300 firefighters have been deployed to fight the fire, reports France Bleu Roussillon.

Despite their intervention, the fire "remains active", said prefect Étienne Stoskopf on Wednesday.

300 people sheltered

Eight starts of fire were observed in the surroundings, raising fears of voluntary actions.

The action of the firefighters and a decrease in the force of the wind, however, made it possible to stop the progression of the fire towards the dwellings.

However, the flames continue to gain ground.

A crisis unit has been set up.

300 people had been evacuated.

Residents were able to return to their homes.

Holidaymakers are accommodated in a municipal hall in Salses-le-Château.

Some roads closed to traffic have been reopened.

Water and electricity cuts occurred.

Investigations will be conducted after the fire is extinguished.
