What are the differences between a keyboard and a gaming keyboard?

A gaming keyboard is a special type of keyboard that has been designed for gamers according to their expectations.

For games that require high precision, minimal latency and resistance to thousands or even millions of keystrokes, gamers need a specific keyboard, often equipped with mechanical keys.

These switches, once also used in a professional context, are more durable and offer better tactile feedback than membrane keyboards, although the latter have also improved on this point.

A gaming keyboard also has specific keys.

It happens for example that the Z, Q, S and D keys are of a different texture to identify them more quickly.

These 4 keys are often used for movement.

Sometimes multiple sets of keys are provided.

Finally, a gaming keyboard offers either a robust connection via a braided cable and a gold-plated connector, or a 2.4 GHz wireless connection with a USB receiver to limit latency.

What are the different types of gaming keyboard?

There are several types of gaming keyboard, but the big difference often mentioned lies in the type of key.

On the one hand we find the membrane keyboards which are the ones that equip most computers.

On a membrane keyboard, all the keys are activated by a single membrane, on which a mechanism or a silicone dome is superimposed so that each key simulates tactile feedback.

We also speak of a “chiclet” keyboard for laptop-type keyboards, with keys spaced apart from each other.

On the other hand, on a mechanical gaming keyboard, each key has its own switch.

And there are several types of mechanical keyboard depending on the type of touch and travel you want: with or without click, with linear travel or not... Some players have their preferences.
