She wondered if Vilnius consulted with allies in Western Europe and the US before making such a decision. 

“It seems to me that this is a potential case of trapping the alliance,” Ashford said.

The expert explained that, in her opinion, we are talking about a situation where one member of the association manages to draw his ally into a conflict that does not meet his interests. 

According to her, Lithuanian policy shows that Lithuania is more inclined to worsen with Russia than France, Germany or the United States.

Earlier, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia Dmitry Medvedev said that Moscow's retaliatory measures to restrict transit to the Kaliningrad region are able to "cut off the oxygen" in the Baltics.

On June 17, the Lithuanian Railways notified the Kaliningrad Railways of stopping the transit of a number of sanctioned goods.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said that lifting restrictions on transit to the Kaliningrad region is the prerogative of the European Commission.

Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said that Russia is determined to resolve the situation with the transport blockade of Kaliningrad by Lithuania.

According to him, Moscow's position is communicated to the state through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
