• In a video broadcast last year, L214 revealed the horror of a sow slaughterhouse belonging to Intermarché in Finistère.

  • For the association, "these convictions remain weak, and there is little chance that they will dissuade other slaughterhouses from breaking the laws".

The images are chilling.

In a video broadcast in May 2021, the L214 association pinned an Intermarché slaughterhouse in Briec in Finistère.

Inside, thousands of sows were piled up to be killed and then cut up.

The video had revealed the horror of the animals' living conditions with sows being kicked and prodded as they dragged themselves on the ground.

Others also received stings in the anus or in the eyes in order to encourage them to move forward more quickly.

Following the broadcast, the Quimper prosecutor's office opened an investigation.

Monday, the case was tried before the criminal court of Quimper which sentenced the slaughterhouse to a fine of 21,500 euros for ill-treatment.

Four employees or former employees of the slaughterhouse were sentenced to penalties ranging from a fine of 1,000 euros to six months in prison, suspended.

They were prosecuted for “serious abuse or acts of cruelty” and “mistreatment” of an animal.

"These convictions remain weak", according to L214

The four employees, three of whom had been dismissed after the fact, had in particular justified the ill-treatment by "the rates to be respected".

In addition, the slaughterhouse will have to pay 5,000 euros in damages to L214 and 1,000 euros to the animal defense association Stéphane Lamart.

Both were civil parties.

“The court went beyond the requisitions of the prosecution, which is encouraging.

Nevertheless, these convictions remain weak, and there is little chance that they will dissuade other slaughterhouses from breaking the laws”, reacted in a press release Brigitte Gothière, co-founder of L124.

The request filed by the association with the administrative court for “culpable deficiency of the State veterinary services” is also still in progress, underlines the association.
