The bodies of at least 20 people, mostly young men, were found unharmed at a nightclub in East London, South Africa, local police said Monday.
"Seventeen young men have been found dead in a night pub here in East London," district police chief General Thembinkosi Kinana told ENCA television.
Then it was announced that the death toll had risen to 20 bodies.
He added that the victims ranged in age from 18 to 20 years, and according to pictures circulated on social media, the bodies were lying on the ground and no injuries were visible on them.
Local television stations broadcast pictures of a crowd of families and onlookers gathered near the nightclub.
East London is home to one million people and is located on the Indian Ocean, about 700 km south of Johannesburg.
