A 12-year-old child drowned on Saturday while swimming in Chasse-sur-Rhône (Isère), reports France Bleu Isère.

The young boy was with his little sister, aged 6, in the waters of the Rhône.

The girl was rescued by witnesses, who were able to extract her from the water before being taken care of by the rescue services.

But her big brother sank and was swept away by the current.

No swimming

The firefighters managed to fish out his body and provided cardiac massage, to no avail.

The child was in cardiorespiratory arrest and could not be resuscitated.

Her mother was taken to hospital in shock.

The family, originally from Givors, wanted to cool off in the river.

The mother and her two children were near a bridge.

The mayor of Chasse-sur-Rhône, Christophe Bouvier, reminds France Bleu and Dauphiné Libéré that swimming is prohibited in the Rhône.

In particular, currents and the formation of whirlpools can be very dangerous.
