Candidate of the Renaissance group for the presidency of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet has left his post as Minister of Overseas Territories, announces a decree published, Sunday, June 26, in the Official Journal.

"The functions of Mrs. Yaël Braun-Pivet are terminated" and "the functions of Minister of Overseas Territories are exercised by the Prime Minister", specifies this decree issued on Saturday by Emmanuel Macron on the proposal of Elisabeth Borne.

For the first time in France, a woman should have access to the "perch" in the National Assembly.

Still a novice in politics in 2017, Yaël Braun-Pivet, ex-president of the Law Commission of the Assembly and deputy of Yvelines, was invested on Wednesday by the presidential majority and should succeed Richard Ferrand, a close friend of Emmanuel Macron defeated in the second round of legislative elections.

All the deputies must decide Tuesday afternoon during a secret ballot vote at the podium.

Also present are Annie Genevard (LR), ex-vice-president LR of the Assembly, the elected RN Sébastien Chenu, and there will certainly be a candidate from the union of the left.

If the absolute majority of the votes cast has not been obtained in the first two rounds of voting, the relative majority is sufficient in the third round, which should guarantee, barring an accident, the election of Yaël Braun-Pivet.

Anger among overseas elected officials

The announcement of the candidacy of the Minister of Overseas Territories for the presidency of the National Assembly, a month after her appointment, aroused anger but above all resignation among elected officials from overseas.

Élie Califer, newly elected PS deputy from Guadeloupe, expressed Thursday morning his "deep disappointment to note that once again, this government pays little attention" to overseas territories, in a press release.

"Beyond the fine words heard recently, the new governmental consideration displayed after the cry of anger expressed at the ballot box by our populations, this new government does indeed retain the same brutal, distant and even indifferent attitude to the regard to our territories", he adds, asking the Prime Minister "not to leave the Overseas Ministry without a captain".

"Between 'rebuilding the damaged link with the #overseas' and the paneling of the Hôtel de Lassay, Madame the ephemeral minister has obviously backed down before the obstacle", quipped Olivier Nicolas, PS national secretary for Overseas, on social networks.

Olivier Faure, First Secretary of the PS, believes that "this rescue who can is as insulting to Ms. Borne as her ministers are fleeing, as it is to our overseas fellow citizens who discover that the Overseas Ministry is ultimately not 'the finest wallet ever'".

But for several other overseas elected officials, the time is more for resignation.

"Perhaps she [Yaël Braun-Pivet, NDLR] did not really want this ministry, that it was a small gift that was given to her to thank her for her loyalty. But whoever the person who will be there, we will do with it," said Wednesday Davy Rimane, elected Saturday deputy for the 2nd constituency of Guyana with the support of La France insoumise.
