The U.S. Supreme Court on June 24 local time overturned the Roe v. Wade case that protected women's abortion rights, meaning that women's abortion rights will no longer be protected by the U.S. Constitution.

A spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres said restricting abortion would not stop people from seeking the procedure, "it would only make it more deadly".

Sexual and reproductive health and rights are the foundation on which the world's women choose to live, empower and equalize, said UN Secretary-General's Spokesperson Djarric.

"Restricting abortion doesn't stop people from seeking it, it just makes it more deadly."

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said the ruling marked a major setback 50 years after the United States protected sexual and reproductive health and rights through Roe v. Wade.

She stressed that this was a huge blow to women's human rights and gender equality.

According to reports, Roe v. Wade was a "landmark" case in the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court ruling on a woman's right to abortion.

The Supreme Court ruled at the time that women have the right to an abortion, which is constitutionally protected.
