  • Security Siege of Madrid hotels for the NATO Summit: the Police will remove all parked cars within a radius of 300 meters

  • Security Sacks and construction material are prohibited in different streets of Madrid by the NATO summit

The tension in the city is increasing on the eve of the NATO summit that will take place in Madrid on

Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30.

The National Police has reinforced

controls on public transport and around the IFEMA fairgrounds,

where They will hold the meetings of the heads of state and diplomatic delegations.

During these days the presence of the National Police has already been reinforced in the Madrid Metro, Cercanías, Renfe and in the airports.

In IFEMA, in addition,

the riot police

have increased their on-site work and have already begun to identify the vehicles that circulate through the area to enter and leave the Campo de las Naciones.

The Subsoil Unit of the National Police

has more work these days than ever.

This group is in charge of checking all the underground corridors and sewers in the areas of the city through which the delegations are going to pass and where the meetings are going to be held.

At the IFEMA fairgrounds, the Madrid City Council has already placed

vertical signs announcing that from next Monday, the 27th, it is not possible to park on the main streets of the area,

such as Avenida del Partenón.

The plates bear a sticker from the Municipal Police where it is indicated: “On the occasion of Summit 2022, vehicle parking will be prohibited on this street from 01:00 a.m. on Monday, June 27, until 01:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 2, so that the car that remains parked will be removed, in application of current traffic regulations.

The first delegations will arrive in Madrid next Monday, although

the bulk of the delegations will land on Tuesday, June 28 at the Barajas and Torrejón airports.

The first traffic cuts in Madrid will take place on Tuesday 28 from noon, with the arrival of up to 40 diplomatic delegations.

Already on Tuesday 28, a reception is held at the Royal Palace that will also force the entire area of Bailén and Gran Vía to be closed from 7:00 p.m.

On Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 June there will be several time slots - in the morning and in the afternoon - in which traffic between the center of Madrid and IFEMA will be cut

so that the delegations circulate without stopping to the fairgrounds and vice versa.

Agents expect each diplomatic caravan to spend less than 10 minutes traveling from downtown hotels to the Campo de las Naciones, where the Summit will take place.

In addition, there will be other areas of the capital restricted for security reasons.

Free EMT for three days

The mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, announced this Thursday that trips on the buses of the Municipal Transport Company (EMT) will be free on June 28, 29 and 30, coinciding with the NATO Summit in the capital.

This was indicated in statements to the media at the gates of the Palacio de Cibeles, where he explained that they have made this decision to facilitate the mobility of people, although he stressed that "it is better not to move around the city of Madrid on those days" .

The mayor commented that all the restrictions that will take place during those days must be taken into account, such as

the security perimeter of three kilometers around IFEMA,

but above all that the Paseo de la Castellana, the main axis of the capital, "is going to to be cut off and blocked" throughout the afternoon of June 28, 29 and 30.

Mercedes González, delegate of the Government and Almeida have once again recommended teleworking during the next week in Madrid and have stated that for workers who have to go in person the easiest option is public transport, with the reinforcement of the Metro lines by part of the community.

"We hope that people have patience,

the people of Madrid are very proud citizens of the city we inhabit", González indicated.

Likewise, he has asserted that the summit will be "a great event" and that there will be cuts on the A-2, around the M-11 and on the Castellana axis.

"Madrid is going to see its vital rhythm changed" and there will be many security measures and control rings."
