The revocation of the right to abortion by the Supreme Court of the United States is a "dangerous signal" and threatens the rights of women "in the rest of the world and even in France", estimated Friday the French associations for the defense of the right. to abortion.

This decision will have "disastrous" consequences for American women, but also sends "a dangerous signal which reinforces the supporters of anti-abortion movements" elsewhere in the world, thus judged the High Council for Equality (HCE) in a press release. .

"This fundamental right remains threatened by the reactionary currents, which deploy a constant work of liberticide lobby including within the European Union", continues the HCE.

"To guard against any attempt to hinder women's rights", it is urgent "to include the right to abortion in our French Constitution", as well as in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, has advocated the High Council, an independent consultative body reporting to the Prime Minister.

Planned Parenthood deplored on Twitter "a concerted and calculated global effort by conservative extremists".

The Supreme Court's decision is a huge setback for all women.

Every time the right to abortion is attacked somewhere, the shock wave spreads to other countries.

Call for demonstration next Saturday

Late Friday afternoon, around fifty people gathered at the Place de la République in Paris to defend the right to abortion.

The demonstration, at the call of several feminist and leftist organizations, had been planned before the announcement of the Supreme Court's decision.

The participants carried signs proclaiming in English "Solidarity for our American sisters" or "USA: weapons have more rights than our vaginas".

"We wanted to show our support for women in the United States. The United States has a significant weight as a model for the defense of fundamental rights. However, the fundamental rights of women are called into question. For us, it is really a return to rear which is already effective in Poland and Hungary", declared to AFP, Daniele Gaudry, militant of Family planning and "collective abortion in Europe the women decide".

For Suzy Rojtman, member of the same collective: "We were in a rather rising period, because abortion was authorized in Colombia, Argentina, Ireland. We fear a sudden stop."

The collective calls for mobilization next Saturday.

Application for constitutionalization of this right

"It would be enough for France to have a parliament with a conservative majority, and abortion could be banned," said the president of the Women's Foundation, Anne-Cécile Mailfert, to AFP.

To remedy this "fragility", "we must constitutionalize this right, we have been asking for it for a long time", she added.

For its part, the HCE is also worried about the "dangers of monopolistic production of the abortion pill", in this case by the Nordic Pharma laboratory, "whose substantial part of the capital is now American".

This company "could suffer significant intimidation from anti-abortion movements" and it would therefore be necessary to relocate to Europe, "and as quickly as possible to France" the manufacture of this pill, according to the HCE.
