Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed with Iranian officials in Tehran the latest developments related to the nuclear agreement, the situation in Ukraine and Gulf security;

Lavrov met today, Thursday, with his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, at the Iranian Foreign Ministry headquarters in Tehran, where the two sides discussed the file of the Vienna negotiations and the reactivation of the nuclear agreement, as well as the war in Ukraine, regional developments and files of common interest.
During the joint press conference between them, the Iranian Foreign Minister said that he discussed with his Russian counterpart the document of comprehensive and strategic cooperation between Tehran and Moscow, adding that Tehran stressed its position on the war in Ukraine, which is the need for a diplomatic solution to the crisis.
Abdullahian added that he discussed with Lavrov the developments of the Iranian nuclear file, and thanked Russia and China for their support of his country's position.
For his part, Lavrov said that he discussed in Tehran the development of bilateral relations between Russia and Iran, and "US hostile steps against our two countries." The Russian Foreign Minister condemned the policy practiced by the United States against independent countries, and said that Washington wants to change the principles of international law.
In another context, the Russian Foreign Minister said that his country is working to ensure the security of the Gulf region, and is seeking "to normalize relations between Iran and the countries of the region."
The Iranian TV website stated that the Russian minister held talks with Iranian officials about the nuclear agreement, the situation in Ukraine, Syria and Afghanistan, strengthening cooperation in the field of trade and energy, as well as developing cooperation with Eurasia and the Caucasus countries.

During his meeting with the Russian official on Wednesday, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said that work should be done to limit the efforts of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to expand its sphere of influence in any region of the world, including West Asia, Central Asia and the Caucasus region, and to prevent any foreign military presence in The Caspian Sea region, especially on the Iranian coast.
Raisi added that the actions of the United States and NATO are the reason for the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, stressing the need to end the war urgently;
He expressed Tehran's readiness to provide assistance in reaching a diplomatic solution to the crisis.
The Iranian president also stressed the importance of economic cooperation between Tehran and Moscow, noting that strengthening cooperation and coordination is an effective way to confront the US economic unilateral and political sanctions against independent countries.

For his part, Lavrov said that Moscow is adapting to what he described as the aggressive policies of the West, adding that "in all countries that suffer from the negative impact of the selfish approach of the United States and its satellite countries, there is an objective need to reshape their economic relations so that they can avoid dependence on whims and vagaries of our Western partners.
The visit comes at a time when Iran and Russia - the two countries under international sanctions - said last May that they wanted to strengthen their relations in the energy and trade sectors.
It also comes in the context of the Iranian nuclear talks that began in Vienna in April 2021 between Iran and the great powers (Russia, the United States, China, France, Britain and Germany) and which have been stalled since last March.
