This long-awaited decision by kyiv, taken at a summit of heads of state and government of EU countries in Brussels, marks the start of a long and complex process with a view to membership.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed Thursday "a unique and historic moment" after Ukraine was granted official candidate status for the European Union.

"This is a unique and historic moment in Ukraine-EU relations," Zelensky tweeted, saying that, in his view, "Ukraine's future lies within the EU" .
