Hamad Medical Corporation announced the success of the second lung transplant operation in the State of Qatar, which was conducted at Hamad General Hospital, after the success of the first lung transplant in June of last year, Qatar News Agency reported today, Wednesday.

The Minister of Public Health, Dr. Hanan Mohamed Al-Kuwari, visited the patient, who is 67 years old, an Arab resident who has lived all his life in the State of Qatar.

This complex surgery was performed on the patient last May by a multidisciplinary team at Hamad Medical Corporation led by Professor Takahiro Otto, a world-renowned expert in the field of lung transplantation.

A lung transplant is a surgical procedure in which a patient's diseased lungs are replaced with lungs from a donor. These operations are used for people with lung failure when all other treatment options are proven to be ineffective.

In addition to the lung transplant operation, 9 kidney transplants and a liver transplant were also performed at Hamad General Hospital of Hamad Medical Corporation last May, as these organs were obtained from 7 living donors and one deceased donor. Organ transplants to their homes in good health after a relatively short stay in the hospital.


Dr. Riyad Fadel, director of the Qatar Organ Donation Center (Hiba) and head of the committee supervising the lung transplant program at Hamad Medical Corporation, said that the patient who underwent a lung transplant is recovering well with the support of the multidisciplinary organ transplant team at Hamad Medical Corporation.

He pointed out in a press statement - today, Wednesday - that the record number of organ transplants that were performed in a short period of time with a rapid recovery rate for patients confirms that the organ transplant program in the State of Qatar benefits from the availability of an effective health care system and highly trained and qualified medical cadres, in addition to technological means. sophisticated.

It is worth noting that the first lung transplant operation in Qatar was successfully performed at Hamad General Hospital by a team of Hamad Medical Corporation surgeons, for a 39-year-old patient, in June of last year 2021.
