Russian President Vladimir Putin laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier that day, and a series of commemorative activities were held across Russia.

  According to the Kremlin website, on the 81st anniversary of the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War, Putin laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Alexander Garden, near the Kremlin Wall, in memory of those who died in the war with the German fascist invaders.

Since then, Putin has also laid flowers at the "Hero City" and "Military Honor City" monuments in the Alexander Garden.

  Veterans of the Great Patriotic War, active servicemen and veterans of the Russian Armed Forces, participants of special military operations, representatives of military units in the Moscow region and graduates of military academies attended the commemorative ceremony.

Russian Defense Minister Shoigu and others also laid flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

  On that day, various forms of commemorative activities were held all over Russia, including laying flowers, lighting commemorative candles, holding concerts, repertoire performances, visits to the theme of the Great Patriotic War, film exhibitions, and open classes.

  On June 22, 1941, the German fascists tore up the "Soviet-German Nonaggression Pact" and brazenly invaded the Soviet Union, and the Great Patriotic War broke out.

The war lasted 1,418 days, and about 27 million Soviet soldiers and civilians died.

June 22 was designated by the Russian government as the "Day of Remembrance and Mourning".
