• Anti-crisis decree The 15% increase agreed by the Government with Bildu benefits 445,000 pensions and will cost 30 million per month

  • How When is the extra summer pay of pensioners charged in 2022

The Spanish population continues to age and, for the first time in history, the country already exceeds 20% of Spaniards over 65 years of age.

In the midst of the debate on the rise in pensions, this figure provided by the INE (National Institute of Statistics), assumes that a third of the inhabitants in Spain belong to the elderly.

This number has not stopped increasing since 1975 and the trend indicates that the population with a need for monetary retribution from the State grows more and more.

Apart from aging, the data reflects a decrease in the Spanish population where the number of Spaniards plummets with 113,023 fewer inhabitants, although the figure is offset by an increase in immigration in the country, given that the migratory balance is positive with 148,677 inhabitants due to the migration movements that have occurred after the break that they suffered due to the pandemic and the confinement of 2020. Thus, the population increased by 34,110 people during 2021.

Population growth

Regarding the relative population growth by autonomous communities, the Region of Murcia (0.63%), the Valencian Community (0.50%) and the Canary Islands (0.36%), are the ones that have shown the greatest increase during 2021 while , Aragón (-1.24%), Asturias (-0.66%) and Extremadura (-0.44%), are the ones that have suffered the greatest collapse, an indicator that the rural exodus in the interior of the country has not intention to stop its growth.

immigration grows

Another of the most significant figures is produced in the emigration of foreigners, whose number grew notably to 304,607 compared to the previous year and managed to reach the highest level since 2014, when these migratory flows reached 319,989 due to the economic crisis in which Europe was involved.

Of the emigrants who left Spain in 2021, the majority had already done so at some point before (86.1%), as indicated by the INE, these departures may be a consequence of the "failure of the migration project" or the lack to find stability in the country.

The total number of foreigners who established their residence in Spain in 2021 is 530,401 -13.4% more than in 2020- compared to the 381,724 Spaniards who moved to another country.

This represents 53.6% less than the previous year.

However, there is an increase in the number of immigrations.

Most of the migratory movements were carried out by individuals of Moroccan nationality, who accounted for a figure of 59,181 arrivals in Spain, followed by Colombian (39,880) and Italian (29,446) nationalities.

This year the highest rate of emigration has been given by foreigners who resided in Spain because, the foreign migration of Spaniards has been negative in 2021 for the second consecutive year, because there have only been 4,417 Spaniards abroad, a number that has It was given by an immigration from abroad of 72,700 people and 77,117 who emigrated abroad.
