Athletic's presidential candidate

Jon Uriarte

is considering breaking his agreement with

Carlos Aviña

as the club's possible sports director after messages were spread on Twitter by the Mexican coach with homophobic and sexist content.

Uriarte's candidacy will announce a decision on Aviña in the next few hours, who this morning was presented as the pillar of the club's sporting transformation project.

Uriarte had assured that he will not advance the name of his coach until tomorrow, Wednesday or Thursday, so as not to remove the informative focus from the project led by Aviña.

The platform headed by Uriarte and competing with Ricardo Barkala and Iñaki Arechabaleta considers that Aviña's messages "are

unacceptable

and collide head-on with the principles and values" that they defend.

A statement that has been made public after messages broadcast by Aviña in 2021 and in 2013 on his Twitter account were made public and in which, in addition to homophobic and sexist content, references to his status as a Real Madrid follower are also included.

In the statement issued by the Uriarte group it is recognized that they have been made aware of these messages "hours before" a presentation of the sports project in which it has not been specified who will be the coach they will make public before next Friday, when more than 43,000 Athletic members will have to elect the Atletico president.

Aviña, current sports director of the Círculo de Brujas, would be the head of a new sports structure in which

Sergio Navarro

(former Villarreal and Levante) would be in charge of the Lezama facilities, the headquarters of the Bilbao club's youth academy.

"As soon as we have analyzed all the variables, a decision will be made", the Uriarte team has announced about this controversy that weighs down their candidacy in the sprint of a tight electoral race in which Arechabaleta has already made public the hiring of Marcelo Bielsa while Ricardo Barkala keeps the coach's ace saved until the last moment.
