The Swedish Maritime Administration shares the fishing industry's concerns when it comes to herring shortages.

And the research also confirms a downward trend in the amount of herring, says Jens Persson, investigator at the Swedish Maritime Administration.

- This mainly applies to the large herring that is over 18 cm, and it is often the one used for consumption, says Jens Persson.

What does it depend on?

- Probably there are several different factors that govern.

Environmental and climate factors and of course also fishing.

Especially the fishing that is conducted out at sea in connection with the trawl limit, where you can catch large quantities for a limited time in limited areas.

In the past year, the Swedish Maritime Administration has proposed a number of different measures that can be implemented in this area.

These include reduced fishing mortality and limited fishing in certain areas adjacent to the trawl limit.

When can these proposals take effect?

- In this type of measure, Sweden needs to agree with other EU countries that have the opportunity to fish in the same water.

Even if the process is handled quickly, it may take some time.

We currently do not know when our proposed measures will be in place, says Jens Persson, investigator at the Swedish Maritime Administration.
