The message from the Liberals means that the party goes one step further than what the government intends to do, which Ekot was the first to report on.

The Government and Minister of Education Lina Axelsson Kihlblom (S) want to see a stop to new religious independent schools from 2024 and that those that already exist should not be able to expand their activities, however, it is unclear whether that bill will be passed before the election this autumn.

The Liberals want independent schools to be completely banned within the next term and for existing schools to apply for their permits.

- We largely agree with the party board on this.

We see extensive problems, not least because Säpo has pointed to a large number of problems with certain schools in Gothenburg and Malmö that are run in an extremely unsustainable way, says Johan Pehrson.

"Message to the voters"

The proposal is part of the party's line to tighten up the regulations for independent schools in Sweden, more proposals are to be expected in the future according to the L-leader.

However, it must continue to be permitted with schools with a minority profile, within the framework of the national minorities, for example schools with a Finnish or Jewish profile.

- I hope that the chance for a parliamentary majority in this is good.

This is a message to voters to focus on the school, we want to put a stop to both new and existing religious independent schools.

Is school the Liberals' most important election issue?

- We have many important issues, we talk about integration and climate as well, but if I have to choose a single issue, it is school.

The future of people begins in school and it is the future of the whole of Sweden that is decided if we are talented and well-educated in Sweden, says Johan Pehrson.
