Americans from the ship Marina became some of the first cruise tourists to dock at Frihamnen's new quay.
The container terminal was located here for many years, but when the newly built freight port of Stockholm Norvik harbor opened in 2020, the containers were moved from the inner city to Norvik.
The 330 meter long port location now instead provides space for cruise ships.
- It will be a feeling to get into an inner city quay, says Stefan Scheja, marketing manager for cruises and ferries at Stockholm Ports.
Ships coexist with new district
At the same time, a new district is emerging in the area where 4,000 homes are planned with additional schools, sports activities, offices and retail spaces.
Construction is expected to start construction in the area in 2028.
- We work closely with the port when we plan the city.
The ships sound a bit and we have to deal with that in the coming part of the state.
We must find workable solutions for both parties.
But in the long run, it will be quieter thanks to the properties being connected to electricity, says Johanna Bruce who is the planning project manager at the Development Office.
