Magnitude 6.0 earthquake shakes Taiwan, no damage reported

The east coast of Taiwan was hit by a 6.0-magnitude earthquake today.

The quake caused buildings to shake briefly in the capital, Taipei, but there were no immediate reports of damage.

The seismological agency said the quake occurred at a depth of 6.8 kilometers and was centered on Hualien County, a sparsely populated area.

The quake was felt all over Taiwan, she added.

Taiwan lies near the intersection of two tectonic plates, which makes it vulnerable to earthquakes.

An earthquake killed 100 people in southern Taiwan in 2016, while a 7.3 earthquake killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.
