The ETA member

Mikel Carrera Sarobe

sucked on the candy wrapper that has been key for the Ertzaintza to attribute to him after

20 years

the

murder of two ertzainas in Beasain

(Gipuzkoa), in which a second terrorist intervened about whom "there is still no evidence science on the same level.

These advances in the investigation of the murder of agents Francisco Javier Mijangos and

Ana Isabel Arostegi

have been revealed this Monday in San Sebastian by the Minister of Security,

Josu Erkoreka

, after participating in a Summer Course at the University of the Basque Country, entitled " Forensic sciences and criminalistics: the judicial and police management of the crime scene".

Erkoreka

has assured that there are "data and testimonies" that show that in the attack in which the two Ertzainas were murdered on November 23, 2011, a second person intervened about whom "there is still no scientific evidence at the same level and to the same extent as there is in relation to

Mikel Carrera

".

However, he wanted to make it clear that "the investigation continues" and that "the mechanisms that the Scientific Police have at their disposal continue to be activated to see if it is possible, also in this case, an identification of the authorship that serves with the same basis than in the case of Carrera to make a clear imputation before a subsequent trial".

Erkoreka

has not provided more details about this second person involved in the events, although eyewitnesses to the attack then claimed to have seen a young brunette leave the area with a gun in her hand.

The counselor wanted to congratulate the Ertzaintza Scientific Police for this "extraordinary work" that has allowed twenty years later to attribute this double attack to the former ETA military chief,

Mikel Kabikoitz Carrera Sarobe

, "Ata", who is serving a sentence in France.

He explained that this important advance has been possible thanks to the preservation of the evidence by the

Ertzaintza

, which two days after the attack, on November 25, 2001, located, also in

Beasain

, the stolen vehicle that Carrera Sarobe allegedly used to commit the attack.

A team from the

Basque Police Explosives Disposal Unit

managed to neutralize the electrical explosive device with a timer placed to blow up the car after the flight and thus destroy all the evidence.

From the visual inspection of the vehicle, the Ertzaintza obtained numerous pieces of evidence, including traces of

fingerprints and genetic evidence

that have been periodically compared with police databases.

Thanks to

advances in forensic genetics

, on June 9, the anonymous evidence correctly preserved during this investigation gave a positive result and made it possible to determine the authorship of at least one person in this attack.

Specifically, one of the anonymous genetic profiles obtained from a candy wrapper located in the vehicle used to flee coincided with Carrera's genetic profile.

Erkoreka

has assured that this case demonstrates the importance of a "correct, professional and scrupulous" management of a crime scene "from both a police and judicial perspective".

This will be one of the issues that will focus this

Summer Course at the University of the Basque Country

, organized jointly with the Basque Institute of Criminology and directed by the doctor of Law Isabel Germán and the forensic doctor and doctor of Medicine Francisco Exteberria.
