• The presidential coalition did not succeed in its bet to obtain an absolute majority for a second five-year term, blocked at less than 230 seats.

  • A score that obliges Together!

to seek alliances among the three opposition forces (Nupes, RN, LR).

  • The latter have for the moment addressed a dismissal of the possibility of a government pact, even if the debate is (a little) open at LR.

A hell of a shower on the back of the neck to refresh the scorching atmosphere of the last few days.

The presidential coalition, which still hoped to snatch an absolute majority in the National Assembly, has shrunk by almost half compared to 2017. With barely 220 seats including its Modem and Horizons allies, Together!

finds itself surrounded on its left by the Nupes, which, if it has failed in its quest for Matignon, accumulates nearly 150 deputies ready to fight step by step on each bill, and on its right by the RN, author of an improbable breakthrough even in his wildest fantasies (89 seats).

A defeat which is accompanied by great damage in the elite troops: exit Amélie de Montchalin, brief Minister of Energy Transition, exit Christophe Castaner, the boss of the LREM group at the Palais Bourbon, exit also Richard Ferrand, the president of the 'National Assembly.

In other words, it looks like cotton to govern with such a heterogeneous Parliament, very Fourth Republic in spirit, and without the macronist tauliers of the previous five-year term at the helm.

A little thought for Olivier Véran, who may have thought of taking it easy, after two years of embodying the Covid crisis.

It was a failure for the new Minister for Relations with Parliament, who promised to "build a majority very quickly so that it becomes absolute in the National Assembly", at least on the next bills on the program (power to 'purchase,

LR in extra strength?

But who will reach out the other hand?

Unsurprisingly, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who no longer has any desire to retire, does not think about it for a second: "There is no division to overcome with us, because we are not from the same world, we do not have the same objectives, the same values".

The RN?

Marine le Pen evokes "a firm opposition, without collusion, but responsible, respectful of institutions and always constructive", nevertheless she is especially delighted "to have made Emmanuel Macron a minority president".

So obviously, everyone sees as big as a house a marriage of convenience with LR, who on the bottom of things, would not have much reason to be prayed after saving the furniture without more on Sunday evening (about 80 seats) .

It is in any case the wish of the former boss of the right Jean-François Copé, who called "for a government pact with Macron in order to fight against the rise of the extremes", immediately denied by Christian Jacob, the boss present, who prefers to "stay in the opposition after having campaigned in the opposition".

Few volunteers, therefore, but between the lines a convergence of views of those that are not said aloud.

By getting together, the three opposition forces can threaten the Macronist government with a motion of censure at any time, while the use of 49.3, now limited to one piece of legislation per session, is not no longer an escape to cling to for the majority.

And again, it could have been worse: Elisabeth Borne, the Prime Minister chosen after weeks of hesitation by the President of the Republic, was elected by a hair's breadth in Calvados.

She won't have a good night's sleep though.
