Students' parents are calling for the issuance of a list of approved fees for private schools

Students of private schools in Abu Dhabi called on the Department of Education and Knowledge to issue a list of approved tuition fees for private schools for the next year 2022-2023, to help them choose schools according to their capabilities, and to close the way for the collection of unauthorized fees, under various items, indicating that they pay Fees are greater than what is advertised in the reports of the "Irtiqa" program published on the department's official website.

The Department of Education and Knowledge stressed the need for each school to obtain its approval regarding school fees and the timetables for their payment, noting its keenness not to set fees that would enable the school to achieve excessive profits, so that the commercial interest prevailed over the quality of education.

In detail, the families of "Emirates Today" students, Ahmed Hussein, Marwa Sayed, and Hala Ibrahim, informed that since they paid the registration fees for their children for the next academic year (seat reservation fees) during the third semester of this year, under the item "Tuition fees for the academic year 2022" - 2023 subject to increase”, they were not informed of the total fees due for the next year, and the dates of payment of the installments, expressing concern that it will be greater than expected.

Muhammad Siddiq, Tamer Khalaf, and Nada Khaled demanded that schools, when announcing the approved tuition fees, collect them in three installments, as the educational regulations stipulate, in order to facilitate the students’ families, pointing out that their children’s schools collected fees in two installments.

The parents of students, Ahmed Obaid, Radwa Shawqi and Salwa Khater, reported that their children's schools raised the prices of textbooks for the next academic year by about 500 dirhams, and made their purchase optional by reservation.

It also informed the students' parents of the possibility of increasing school bus fees.

According to the latest fees announced in the reports of the “Irtiqa” program to inspect private schools in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the highest fees for a private school in the emirate amounted to 96,333 dirhams (British curriculum), while the lowest tuition fees collected by a private school amounted to 2,300 dirhams.

The lowest tuition fees in British curriculum schools amounted to 3200 dirhams.

In the American curriculum, fees ranged from 83,000 dirhams to 4,200 dirhams, depending on the school and grade level.

The fees for schools of the Arab curriculum (the curriculum of the Ministry of Education) ranged between 27 thousand and 200 dirhams, and 2700 dirhams.

As for the fees for the International Baccalaureate curriculum schools, it ranged between 71,600 dirhams, and 27,200 dirhams, while the “Sabis” curriculum schools ranged between 55,500 dirhams, and 19,900 dirhams.

The fees for Indian curriculum schools ranged between 5000 and 25 thousand dirhams.

Fees for Asian curricula schools (Filipino, Pakistani, and Bengali) ranged between 8000 and 2300 dirhams.

The Department of Education and Knowledge stressed, “in the Manual of Private Schools Policies and Guidelines”, the need for the school to obtain its approval regarding school fees, timetables for payment, and payment procedures, before announcing them to the students’ families and starting to collect them, noting that it takes into account when evaluating the appropriateness of school fees. Basic aspects, including providing the necessary information, including submitting a complete financial study using the financial form issued by the department for this purpose, comparing school fees with fees of schools of comparable quality and similar curricula, taking into account the assessment of the school’s overall effectiveness in the latest evaluation report, and the cost of facilities and school services, in addition to ensuring that no fees are set that would enable the school to achieve excessive profits so that the commercial interest would prevail over the quality of education.

Fees that reflect the quality of education

The Department of Education and Knowledge confirmed the development of a policy for tuition fees, aimed at adopting a clear and transparent approach to regulating fees, for both private schools and students’ families, to ensure that tuition fees reflect the quality of education, and that fees are reasonable and approved by the department, and determine the structure of tuition fees required of private schools. And the reasons behind any increase in it, in addition to enabling the students' parents to pay the required fees in a timely and flexible manner.

The department indicated that schools verify the commitment of schools to their fee form, and provide the required information, before issuing approval or rejection of the proposed fees.

She said the school is prohibited from charging any fees beyond the fees it agreed to before the start of the school year.
